Although I am a musician, flute is not one of my instruments; I am an organist, retired choir director, composer, and lapsed string player. This was bought as a Christmas present for an honorary granddaughter, who at age 14 is a Grade 7 flautist.

This seems very well targeted at that type of user; a keen and reasonably competent young flautist starting to expand repertoire.

It covers a very wide range of pieces, ranging from what I would expect to be sight-readable right up to Bach's Badinerie and to the Flight of the Bumble Bee, which I am sure are very far from sight-readable.

But matching this type of collection to the particular stage of development of a young player is a balancing act. I would expect her to grow out of it at some point, and that later she will want the real meat of complete scores, and that she will then find this unsatisfying.
First, this contains extracts only, "as it says on the tin"; which is entirely appropriate for a young player at a particular stage of development, but probably not satisfying in the longer term.

Second, this is written for solo flute only, with no piano accompaniment. So for works which have TWO (or more) prominent melodies simultaneously - including, famously, Wachet Auf and Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring - this score gives only the embellishment and necessarily completely omits the main tune, the chorale melody. That gives a very misleading impression of the music, and it is a missed opportunity; scoring them for flute and piano would enable all parts to be played, and that could be done very interestingly, with both melodies switching between the two instruments.

I haven’t had a chance to play much from this book yet but it looks good.
