I have used Books 1 and 2 and find them pitched just right for beginners - certainly not too much to take in. The pages are attractive and not too daunting for young eyes. They could even be used by an adult to to teach him/her -self. I haven't used the later books yet so I cannot comment on them yet.

My 7 year old son has recently started the piano. The book teaches both hands from the beginning, introducing a note at a time. He likes the tunes, some he knows already. He also likes the cartoons, and the worksheets spread throughout the book to test knowledge so far. I've been playing it too and like it. It's clear and fun.
            Nothing comes to mind.

JT book 3 is a well 'blended' book from book 2 and simply laid out along with the characters that were present in books 1 and 2 which the younger learners love.

A recommended title from my sons piano teacher. A great easy to follow course, we have had part 1 and 2 previous to this. The book is very clearly set out, little illustrations on each page add interest for young children. My son is making great progress using these books.

The John Thompson series is a tried and tested effective way to start the piano for young children. Seven and eight year olds love the colourful monsters. It does however dwell on American folksong a lot and some of the tunes have quite an old fashioned feel, compared to the newer tutor series that are now available.
