Philip Ramey: Fanfare Sonata For Solo Trumpet In C

Books | Trumpet In C

Publisher: G. Schirmer
Artist: Philip Ramey
Format: Sheet Music | Instrumental Album
The Fanfare Sonata, one of the rather too few works for solo trumpet, takes its name from the fanfare-like gestures which are the basis of much of its melodic and rhythmic material. In the opening Moderato there is an incantational first theme and an angularly lyric, rather wistful second theme. These themes reappear in the slow movement (Andante tenebroso) which is a development of both old and new material. The finale (Allegro burlesco) is sprightly, propulsive and high spirited until a final radical shift in mood takes place and the piece ends with a harsh, declamatory coda.

            Musicroom Reviews

This piece I bought as an addition to my trumpet repertoire, because it looked interesting and different. When the package landed on my doorstep, I opened it and had my thoughts confirmed. It is very difficult to play (so it is making me practise!) and has a few sections which keep reappearing in different forms. It is a great addition to one's repertoire.
